Our Philosophy & Origin

Walking is the slowest form of knowing

Bengal cannot be understood through a coach window or a rushed checklist of monuments. Its soul breathes in the shaded courtyards of 300-year-old Rajbaris, the fragrant steam of morning tea stalls, and the quiet rhythm of artisans shaping wet clay into divinity.

Crosswalks by OCA was born as an antidote to sanitized, mass-produced tourism. We are a collective of public historians, architectural researchers, photographers, and lifelong neighborhood residents who believe that immersion is the truest form of experience. We walk at human pace — slow enough to notice the terracotta motif, ask the artisan a question, and listen to the city respond.

“We began Crosswalks because we fell out of love with tourist spectacles, and deeper in love with the unvarnished stories of our home.”
S
Sudipto Chatterjee
Founder & Principal Curator, Crosswalks by OCA

Years ago, a group of university researchers and writers in Kolkata began taking evening strolls through Battala and Chitpur. We stopped to talk to woodblock engravers whose families had carved Bengali letters since 1820, sweetmakers whose brass cauldrons were older than modern India, and caretakers who held keys to private family sanctuaries.

We realized that the most captivating stories of Bengal are never written on museum placards. They exist in living memory, passed across tea cups on wooden benches. Crosswalks by OCA was created to open these doors for travelers who seek depth over spectacle.

Our Guiding Tenets

How we design every step

Every route we curate must answer to four non-negotiable principles that protect the authenticity of the experience and respect the places we walk.

01

Storytellers who live the history

We never hire scripted megaphone tour guides. Every trail is led by a resident researcher, architect, historian, or artisan whose work directly intersects with the neighborhood.

02

Behind closed gates and private alleys

We bypass crowded tourist corridors to take you inside private thakurdalans (courtyards), 180-year-old confectioneries, and print guilds through relationships built over decades.

03

Intimate cohorts, never crowds

Our scheduled walks are strictly capped at 10 to 12 explorers. Small groups preserve the sanctity of neighborhood lanes and allow real, thoughtful conversation between walkers.

04

Stewardship & direct community impact

We don't just tell stories; we sustain the ecosystem. A portion of every ticket directly compensates master craftsmen, local temple caretakers, and heritage custodians.

The Collective

Our Commitment

The Crosswalks Ethical Tourism Charter

Tourism can easily disrupt fragile communities if not practiced with reverence. When you walk with Crosswalks by OCA, you enter an explicit contract of mutual respect between traveler and host.

Neighborhood Sanctity

We never trespass on private lives or treat residents as exhibits. We ask permission before entering family sanctuaries and always maintain quiet, respectful decorum.

Zero-Plastic Trails

All walks are single-use plastic free. We encourage reusable bottles and ensure that our trails leave alleys and riverbanks even cleaner than we found them.

Fair Economic Custodianship

Every tea stop, artisanal potter, and neighborhood confectionery is directly remunerated. We believe heritage tourism must directly enrich the people who safeguard it.
